You can now use both chat and virtual rooms (Meetings) in Gmail on the web and on your smartphone.

If you've been waiting to get your hands on Chat and Virtual Rooms in your personal Gmail account, that day is finally here. Your team and personal communications are sure to become easier and faster with Chat and Meetings, both of which are available on the Gmail interface.

Google has now made both chat and meeting available to all free Google account holders. You can access your settings, enable features and start using them right away.



You can use these features in both the web version and the mobile version of Gmail.

Both chats and virtual rooms are designed to help you communicate better with your work teams or contacts.

How to enable chat and virtual rooms (Meetings) in Gmail

Both chats and virtual rooms are disabled by default and you must manually activate them in your Gmail account.

From the Gmail site

  • Open your favorite browser and go to.
  • Click the gear icon at the top and select View All Settings.
  • Go to the Chats and Meetings tab.
  • Activate the Google Chat option (early access) and click Try it.
  • Click Save Changes to save the changes.
  • You will now see the Chats and Meetings tab on the left of the Gmail interface.

If you want to disable these options, use the same settings menu and disable the option for these features.

  • Open the Gmail app, tap the top menu and select Settings.
  • Select your email account in the list.
  • Scroll down and activate the Chat (early access) checkbox.
  • Select Try it.
  • Both chat and virtual rooms should now be available in your Gmail app.
