There are several methods for backing up Google Photos to your computer. We'll show you how to save your photos and videos from Google Photos to keep a copy on your computer and free up space so if you're hitting the 15GB limit that Google is about to put.

Back up Google Photos using your browser

If you just want to download some photos or videos from Google photos to your computer this method is for you. You can only select up to 500 photos at a time.



  • Go to from your computer browser and log in with your Google account.
  • Select a photo or video.
  • Touch the three vertical dots or the menu Other in the upper right corner.
  • Next, tap Download This option will not appear if the photo or video is already on your computer.

If you want to download more than one image at a time, click the check mark on a single image. Then, keep checking other images by clicking the circle at the top left of each image thumbnail.

If you want to select entire lines, select the first image. Then, hold Shift. Other images are highlighted in blue as you scroll. Don't let go of Shift until you get to all the photos or videos you want to select.

Once selected, click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner and choose Download / Download.

Download individual albums from Google photos

From Google Photos in your browser, open Albums. Open the album you want to download.

Click the menu icon with three vertical dots in the upper right corner once the album is open. You choose "Download all".



How to download a Google Photos backup with Google Takeout

This process allows you to download a copy of all the photos and videos in Google Photos in one click.

Open in your browser and log in with your Google account.

Uncheck everything except Google Photos. Click Deselect All at the top of the list, then scroll down and select Google Photos.

Click "Next step" at the bottom of the list.


Choose how you want the file to be delivered. You can have a link sent to your email or store the files in Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box. You can also choose the frequency, although once is usually the best solution for most users.

Then choose the file type, zip or tgz. Remember, in Windows 10, a tool to decompress zip files is included for free. Finally, choose the file size. It is set to 2GB by default. If you choose something bigger, you will get more downloads.

Click "Create Export" at the bottom of the options list. Depending on the options you choose, you may need to log into your cloud storage account to link it to your Google account for backup. If you chose email, just wait for your link to arrive, which can take some time.
