Google Keep is Google's official note-taking service and application. It is available as a web version, on Android, and as a browser extension for Google Chrome. As it is built into many Android devices, it is used by many Android owners as their primary note-taking application. The content is synchronized with the cloud and you can open notes on the web and in the Android application.

If you want to migrate to another note-taking solution, for example because you want to reduce the number of Google apps and services you use, to migrate to an open source alternative, or are concerned that Google may eventually stop the service, then you need to understand how to export Google Keep data and import it into another note-taking application. In this guide, I'll walk you through these steps (without importing into another note-taking application, but you'll get some tips).

Download your Google Keep notes

You have to use Google's Takeout service for this. Here's how it's done:

  • Visit to open the Takeout website.
  • You must log into your Google account if you are not already logged in.
  • Make sure Keep is selected on the page and nothing else, for example by clicking “deselect all” and selecting Keep manually. You can export other data as well, but since the data is delivered in a single zip file, you may want to keep the notes separate from the other data.
  • Select Next Step at the bottom of the page.
  • Keep everything as is on the page that opens and selects create export .
  • The export may take some time to complete, depending on the size of the data and notes.
  • Select the download links next to the export to export your data to the local system. You must enter your Google account password before the download becomes available.

Google Keep Notes on your device

Google Keep data is provided as an archive; use a program like 7-Zip or PeaZip to extract the data on your device. Google uses different types of files, such as HTML files, image files but also json files.

You can open them all on your device to view them. Some note-taking applications may support some or all of these file types, but not all do.

Google Keep Converter is an open source command line tool for Windows, Mac and Linux, which converts Google Keep data to the YAML format, which is supported by many note-taking applications.

  • Download the latest version of for your operating system.
  • Open a command line prompt.
  • Esegui il comando google-keep-exporter-win.exe inputDir outputDir, ad esempio google-keep-exporter-win.exe c:UsersmartiDownloadstakeoutKeep c:UsersmartiDownloads
    • Note that the Linux and Mac versions have a different filename, which you need to change.
  • The conversion takes place automatically.

Note: I couldn't get the converter to convert the data in the zip archive, I had to point it at the extracted content to convert the data.

Alternative a Google Keep

There are many applications and services for taking notes. Which one you choose depends largely on your needs. Do you need a service with synchronization support, a mobile and web version, just a desktop client?

Here is a selection of Google Keep alternatives:

  • - is an open source note-taking application for Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. It has browser extensions and the data can be synchronized using various cloud services or WebDAV.
  • - Open source cross-platform note-taking application that automatically encrypts notes. Available for desktop, mobile and as a web version.
  • - Open source web application that can be installed as a progressive app on your devices. It requires no registration, is free, does not include tracking or advertising, and can be used offline.
