When drafting an email, choosing an email address from the dozens of those you have saved in Gmail becomes confusing. There may be several duplicates or outdated emails. It is a good idea to delete irrelevant email addresses from Gmail.

When you save a contact to a Gmail account, your email provider saves it with the email address for auto-fill. It is useful when trying to compose an email. It is no longer necessary to find the email address from the contact list. Gmail will automatically extract the email address based on first or last name. If the situation is getting irritating, you can easily remove remembered emails from Gmail.

REMOVE THE EMAIL ADDRESS REMEMBERED BY GMAIL

You can't view or edit saved Gmail contacts from the Gmail web. You must use the Google Contacts web to make changes. Follow the steps below to remove remembered email addresses from Google Contacts.

  •  on the Web.
  • log in using your account information.
  • use the search bar at the top and type the name of the contact you want to remove.
  • select the relevant contact from the suggestions. Tap the three-dot menu next to the contact's name.
  • click Delete and confirm your decision.

You have successfully removed the contact from the Gmail contact database. Gmail will no longer suggest the email address when you try to compose an email.

DISABLE THE GMAIL AUTOMATIC COMPLETION LIST

Gmail will continue to save new email addresses. You don't always want to go to Google Contacts to remove the email address. You can prevent Gmail from creating auto-complete contacts and from creating new contacts based on new email addresses.

You need to use your Gmail settings to make relevant changes. Here's what you need to do.

  • Visit Gmail on the web.
  • Log in using your account information.
  • Click the Settings gear at the top.
  • Open View All Settings.
  • From the General menu, scroll down to Create auto-complete contacts.
  • Select the “I'll add contacts myself” toggle.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and hit the Save Changes button.

From now on, Gmail won't save new email addresses as new contacts.

USE THE INTEGRATION OF GMAIL ON IPHONE

You don't need to use Google Contacts web every time just to remove email addresses remembered in Gmail. Users may also prefer mobile apps.

  • Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
  • Scroll down to Contacts and open Accounts from the following menu.
  • Tap Add account and log in using your Google account details.
  • You'll see a Gmail account appear in the same Accounts menu.
  • From the Gmail menu, enable Contacts.
  • Open the default Contacts app on iPhone.
  • Find your Gmail contacts and open the contact with the email ID you want to delete.
  • Tap Edit in the top right corner.
  • Scroll down and tap the Delete Contact option. Press the confirm button and Gmail will no longer suggest your email address.

USE THE GOOGLE CONTACTS APP ON ANDROID

Unlike iPhone, you don't need to go through half a dozen steps to remove email addresses remembered in Gmail. Since Google Contacts is built into your Android and you have already added an email address, it only takes two or three steps to delete the Gmail address saved on Android. Here's what you need.

  • Open the Google Contacts app on Android. If the app is not built into your Android phone, you can download the Contacts app from the Play Store.
  • Tap on the contact and you will see all the social media accounts linked to it.
  • Select the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Delete.

Repeat the same steps for all the email addresses remembered in Gmail that you want to remove.

This is also useful when some of your contacts use more than two email addresses. Having both the old and the new email address can lead to confusion and errors when composing emails.
