How to sort Microsoft Excel columns by color: - Ordering an Excel document should never have been a difficult job. We are all familiar with sorting Excel sheets based on a specific column or a collection of columns, using cell values. But if I told you that Excel sheets can be sorted using colors, would you buy it? Yes or no, that's exactly what I'm going to tell you. In fact, Excel sheets can be sorted by color. You can use cell values, cell colors, font colors, or even cell icons to sort Excel sheets. Here, I've created a sample Excel sheet to store 10 students' grades in different subjects along with their total grades. I added an additional column called Location. This column actually tells you what percentage of the class the student belongs to. That is, the top 10, the top 20 and so on. A student with a total grade of 389 would have RED color assigned in his / her Position column, which means he is in the top 10% of the class. Refer to the table below to see the color mapping I used in my example Excel sheet.

1 STEP

  • First of all, let me give you an idea on how to give a specific color to a cell. I know it's an old school classic. But some of us may be new to Excel. Then, to give a cell a specific color, click the cell you want to color and then click the Fill Color icon, located at the top.


2 STEP

  • Now from the list of colors choose the one you want and click on it. Purple, your mobile is now colorful! Repeat the same for all cells.

  • Now that you've selected the colors, let's get down to business. Click on the Data tab as shown in the screenshot.

  • Highlight the region of your Excel sheet that you want to sort. You can drag and select or just press CTRL + A together.

  • Click the button called Order. This will open a new window for Settings Order.

  • You will have 4 options as shown below. Choose the first one, which is Sort by. From the drop-down menu, choose the column you want to sort the sheet by. Here I chose Position, which is what I gave the colors to. Now as below from the drop down menu of Something like this, choose Cell Color. Under the Order drop-down menu, you can see all the colors you used to color your cells. Choose the one with the highest priority based on your choice. I chose Network. Then choose Top in the last drop-down menu.


PHASE 7

  • You can use the Add Layer file above to add a different layer. Once you're done, your Order File window would look like the screenshot provided. It is not necessary to specify the last level as it will be handled automatically. Click ok when everything is ready.

PHASE 8

  • That's it, your Excel sheet is so clean and ready to use. That is.
