Google offers customized search results, which is really useful, but you might want to turn the feature off. Here's how you can stop it.

It's probably no longer surprising that Google collects your data to tailor and personalize your experience with Google products, including Google Search. Whenever you search for something on Google, the website changes the results based on the data in your Google account.

This means that two people looking for the same thing on Google Search can get two completely different sets of results. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. You're more likely to find exactly what you're looking for if Google knows something about you.

Regardless, if you want to avoid seeing personalized search results for any reason, Google allows you to turn off the settings. Let's see how to do it on your desktop and mobile.

Google search functionality that you will lose if you disable personal results

Before we look at how to turn off personal results, you need to know what features you will be giving up to do so. Since much of what Google can do for you relies on collecting your personal data, you will lose the following Google Search features by disabling personal results:

  • Autocomplete predictions: searches forecasts based on trends and history.
  • Personal answers: the your location, your reminders, your reservations, your meetings, etc.
  • Recommendations: what to look at, where to travel, nearby restaurants and cafes, etc.

Note that turning off personal results for Google Search doesn't affect your personal results settings in the Google Assistant, Google Maps, or other products.

In other words, your Google Assistant will still be able to answer your questions based on your private data. Likewise, asking him to come home will require your private data (such as your location and home address) stored in Google Maps.

  • Click the toggle to disable custom results.

And you are done. Google will no longer use the data in your Google Account to show you personalized search results on your desktop.

This does not mean that your Google data will be deleted, although you can if you wish. It simply means that your data will not be sent to Google Search.

Other Google products will still be able to access your data for a more personalized Google experience across different services. Do you use Google Search on your phone? Let's see how to disable personal results on mobile.
