With the release of Windows 10, people began to explore its great features and refreshing appearance over the previous version. There are a lot of great features and some keyboard shortcuts that Microsoft has added with this version of Windows.

There is a particular feature called Virtual desktop feature that is here to make life easier and more orderly. Now you can create separate desktops for your different interests and jobs, giving you more control over how to navigate and use your system.

If you want to separate your college thesis work from your music browsing session, the virtual desktop is the answer to this.

How to create a virtual desktop in Windows 10

  1. Click the "Task View" icon located on the taskbar next to the search box in Windows 10

2. If you haven't created a virtual desktop until now, you will see all program windows open on the default desktop, arranged in a side-by-side format. To create a virtual desktop, click the "New Desktop" button in the lower right corner.

3. As soon as you click the button, a new desktop will be created.

You can now see all the desktops you have created along with the default desktop.

The operating system has defined a naming procedure for virtual desktops. The first desktop that is the default desktop is called “Desktop 1”. Subsequently, the other desktops created are named “Desktop 2”, “Desktop 3” and so on.

There is no limit to the number of desktops you can create. The maximum I reached was 103. But you can try harder. Let me warn you that it is a great job to close these desks. This brings me to the topic of how to close these desks.

How to delete virtual desktop in Windows 10

Once the desktops are created, you will see that all desktops are displayed after clicking on the “Task View” icon. Just move your mouse to the cross mark located in the upper right corner of the desktop icon you want to close. Click on that close sign and the desktop will close.

Some additional helpful tips

  • 1. What happens when you edit a document on one of those virtual desktops and accidentally close it? Don't worry, the document will be transferred to your default desktop and your work won't be lost. So somehow the virtual desktop functionality is just here to separate the various program windows based on their categories.
  • 2. All programs that open on a given desktop can be viewed by hovering the mouse over that particular pane of the desktop in "Task View" mode.
  • 3. If you want to transfer a program window from one desktop to another, simply drag and drop the program window from the source desktop to the desired desktop icon.

This brings us to the end of this blog. But before you log out, let's share some keyboard shortcuts related to virtual desktop with you.
