Sometimes, it gets quite irritating when the browser blocks the download of .exe files. Or rather, it is downloaded in the wrong format. You can switch to another browser and try to download the same. But oh! Here, too, you face the same blocking problem. Also, you will find that the installer only blocks the download of .exe files, where all other files with extensions like .docx, .jpgs, .mp3 etc so that documents, images and media are downloaded in the correct format. Likewise, newborn browsers like Microsoft Edge that are compatible with the Windows 10 operating system behave the same way. In the case of Google Chrome, you might find a message like installxx.exe failed, while in the case of Microsoft Edge, the message This file cannot be downloaded to appear.

If you're wondering why this should happen, it's because browsers feel insecure when you try to download new .exe files and install them on your system. This is particularly in cases of third party applications which may involve viruses embedded in them, possibly blocking the entire system. If you need to download the .exe files as well, you need to change some settings on the network. This article will help you solve these problems.

To get started, you will need to open the Internet options. To achieve this, you need to type inetcpl.cpl in the search bar that opens Internet options.

  • In the window that appears, you will find a tab called Safety in the list of menus that appear at the top. Click on that.
  • Then just below you will find various zones like Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, etc. Internet Zone for websites. You can change the settings by choosing the file Custom level Settings.

A list of security settings opens. Of all the options available to choose from, scroll down a bit to find the subtitle Download. Below, enable the file Download in file Y Font download by tapping the option buttons on the left.

Again, scroll down a bit to find the Miscellaneous subtitle. You will find an option below Launching unsafe applications and files. You were previously prevented from downloading .exe files because "disabled" was selected by default. Tap the radio button to the left of Fast (recommended). Save your settings once you're done.

Try downloading any .exe type application. It will download as expected without further browser blocking.
