Search was always present in Windows, but as it progressed with the release, Microsoft realized the importance of search and continued to improve the feature with each update. It was virtually invisible in Windows XP, became a localized search option in Windows 7, started including web search results in Windows 8 / 8.1, and finally introduced Cortana in Windows 10.

However, as they continued to make the search option more and more complex, the possibility of errors increased proportionally. A known issue with the Search / Cortana switch in Windows 10 is when it stops providing results. You can search for the most common applications (eg Notepad) and it would display "no results" or sometimes nothing.

Cause

The reasons behind this problem can be many, but they are problems with system permissions and user profile. We could try some basic steps and see if it works.

Restart your system and see if it helps. Otherwise, we may try the following solutions in sequence to solve the problem.

Solution 1] Check the Windows Search Service

1] Press Win + R to open the Run window and type the command services.msc. Press Enter and the file Head of services.

2] Find Windows Search in the list of services and check if the status is Running. In this case, the Windows Search service is active.

3] If the service status is Stopped, right click on it and select Property.

4] Change the file Initial state to Home and then Apply Settings.

Solution 2] End Cortana and Windows search processes in Task Manager

Although Cortana and Windows Search are different services, they are closely related. So, for this Windows Search issue, we should terminate both processes in Task Manager.

1] Right-click on Application bar and then in Task Manager to open the window.

2] In the job list, right click and select Final task to Cortana Y Search for.

3] Once both processes are finished, press the button Windows key and check if you can search for apps and web links again. This would restart the process.

If that doesn't work, try restarting instead of step 3.

Solution 3] Register Cortana again

1] Open Browser on file and go to the street C: Windows System32 WindowsPowerShell v1.0 .

2] Right click Shell Power and then away Run as administrator.

3] Type the following command in the Powershell window and press Enter:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$ ($ _. InstallLocation) AppXManifest.xml”}

Restart your system and check if you can now search for files using Windows Search.

I hope this helps!
