If you are using Microsoft Excel to store data, you can add up to 4000 unique cell formatting combinations to a worksheet in the MS Excel 2003 version. However, if you are using a newer version of Excel, the maximum combinations of The unique cell formats you can add are up to 64.000.

However, when an Excel file reaches this maximum limit of cell formatting combinations, it will display an error message that says: "Too many different cell formats“, Thus avoiding entering formatting in a cell. You may also see this error when you try to paste cells and data copied from another Excel file.

You have to remember that single format includes any type of cell formatting, such as adding numbers, inserting borders, changing fonts, and even filling colors. All of these and others may use the format limit.

Fortunately, there are several ways to fix this error. Let's see how.

Method 1: remove all kinds of cell formatting

Clearing all kinds of cell formatting in Excel sheet is the first thing you can try.

Step 1: Open the saying Stand out archive and press Ctrl + A keys together on the keyboard to select all data. Now go to Home tab at the top of the file.

Step 2: Now, the options under the Home tab, click Chiaro to expand and select Clear formats.

Now that you've cleared the content, you can easily add a new cell format to your spreadsheet. If the problem persists, you can try the second method.

Method 2: Create a standard font for all cells and light fill colors

Clearing cell formatting for the entire sheet can be drastic, especially if you want to keep some formatting. If so, you can minimize the format as a quick fix. To do this, you can add a single character style to all cells and clear all individual fill colors for all cells. This will automatically reduce the amount of formatting.

Step 1: print Ctrl + A keys together on the keyboard to select them all Stand out cells and then go to the Home tab at the top of the worksheet (as shown in Step 1 in the last method).

Now click to expand source menu and select a new font that will be applied to all cells.

For example, here we have selected Arial.

Step 2: Now click on the file Fill color option. In the palette, select the file Not filled option.

Now all cells will have the same fill color as the raw font. Now you can add the format you want in the cells. But if that doesn't work, try the third method.

Method 3: via Microsoft Excel options

This method is applicable to those who work with MS Excel via Office 365 Pro Plus. This is not valid for any other version of MS Excel.

Speaking of the solution, this indicates that blank cells in Excel sheet can also be formatted. For example, a blank column or row can be configured to have a standard font that will be applied to the data entered later. Therefore, even blank cells can increase the amount of formatting of a single cell.

Here, we can solve this problem by removing any cell formatting added from an Excel sheet by adding the Request option to the Request in Spreadsheet add-in. Let's see how.

Step 1: Open the spreadsheet and click archive top left tab.

Step 2: Now, in the context menu, select Choices on background.

Step 3: A Excel options window, click Accessories left side option. Then, on the right side of the panel, go to the bottom of the page, in the Manage section.

Now from the drop-down menu next to it select COM plugin and press the button Andiamo button next to it.

Step 4: A COM plugin window that opens, check the box next to Ask e premium pulsating ok button.

This will create a file Ask tab in the Excel sheet.

Step 5: You can now select the file Ask tab on the worksheet and select the file Clean up the excess cell format option below Ask language.

Step 6: Now here choose to clear all worksheets in the spreadsheet and click Yup to save changes and exit.

This should help you add cell formatting into the spreadsheet without error, but if that also doesn't work, try the fourth method.

Method 4: Open the spreadsheet in alternative software

There are countless alternative software applications that can help you easily add single cell format to those types of Excel sheets. From Google Sheets to LibreOffice Calc, there are many other reliable alternative programs available online that support Excel file formats.

This software can help you add more cell formatting to Excel sheet smoothly.

That's all. Try any of the above methods to add single cell format to your Excel files easily, without errors.
