Updates are the most important part of any operating system because updates make your computer more secure and up to date.

Many users have reported that they have not been able to update their computer because the update package does not start the download and instead gives an error 0x80070542. The error is caused by some misconfigured files on your computer, we have found some solutions that will work for you and you can download your Windows update again.



Solution 1: Windows Components Service Console

STEP 1 - Press windows Y R at the same time to open the Run dialog box. Gender dCOMCNFG.exe in the text box of the Run dialog box, then press the Enter button. The command will open the component services once pressed Yup at the User Account Control prompt.

STEP 2 - Expand Component services in the left panel, under that selection computer.

STEP 3 - Once the computers have been selected, you will find My Computer in the central panel. Please select My computer, right click on it and then select property.

PHASE 4 - Go to Default properties tab and choose Connect in the file drop-down menu Default authentication level option.

STEP 5 - In the file Default impersonation level, To select precisely identify drop-down menu option.

Click ok to save the settings, then close the component services window. Restart your computer to apply the changes and check if you can refresh the windows or not.



Solution 2: Run the deployment image and the service management service

Deployment Image and Service Management (DISM) is a service that can be invoked at the command prompt that helps restore damaged files. Follow the steps below to run the DISM tool.

STEP 1 - Open the Run dialog by pressing Windows + R, generate cmd in the text box and then hit enter. The command will open the Command Prompt window.

STEP 2: In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and then press Enter to execute the command.

Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth

It will take some time depending on the size of the disk and the level of corruption, wait for it to complete and then restart your computer when done.

Solution 3: Run the Background Intelligent Transfer Service Troubleshooter

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is one of the main services responsible for updates to the Windows operating system. Windows is aware that sometimes the service does not work as it should and therefore has created a special troubleshooter for BITS. The troubleshooter will help you if there is a problem with the BITS service.

STEP 1: Download the Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer Service Website Troubleshooter.

STEP 2: Double-click the downloaded file to run the troubleshooter

STEP 3: Follow the on-screen instructions and it will automatically fix them if it detects damage to your operating system.

Solution 4: Run System File Checker

The System File Checker looks for file system corruption and if it finds system corruption, it removes it and replaces it with the original version. So, if your files get damaged, the system file checker can fix your problems.



STEP 1 - Press the button windows and find the command prompt, right click on the first result and then select run as administrator.

STEP 2 - Press Yup at the User Account Control prompt.

STEP 3: Type the following command in the Command Prompt window and then press Enter to execute the command.

SFC / scannow


Wait for the scan to complete, it will take some time to scan the entire system for damage. After the scan is complete, close the Command Prompt window and restart your system.

Solution 5: Update Windows on clean boot

Many users can download the update after booting in the clean boot state. In the clean boot state the computer boots with minimal services and drivers, so it would be easy for Windows. Follow the procedure below to start the clean state.

STEP 1 - Press windows and search msconfig and then hit enter to open the system setup utility.

STEP 2 - Select Selective startup, check charging system services below and uncheck the Load startup items.

PHASE 3 - Go to Services tab, select the checkbox titled Hide all Microsoft services then click Disable everything button. Click OK to save the settings

STEP 4: Restart your computer, it will boot into clean boot state. Download the update from Windows Update and restart your computer again, it will start in normal mode.
